Kyuushi's small black form was tucked into a hole inside a large tree. Her eyes were covered by one thin paw, and her ears were folded on the sides of her head, the epitome of dejection. She'd spent 3 months hidden in the woods of the Unclaimed Terra. They had been warm until the recent turning of the moon. It seemed that even her safe haven, the Akemi Woods, was victim to the elements, with a cold frost drifting through the forest and a light snow covering it. When Kyuushi had ventured out to find prey, she'd been dumped with snow 3 times, by the tall canvas of trees that simply collected snow until the weight was too much. She was getting better at it, honestly. Rabbits and other small creatures were easy to catch, with her speed and her wit, they were easy meals. Her jaws were strong, and could make the killing quick, the way she wanted it. No animal would have prolong suffering at her own fangs.
Kyuushi opened her eyes slowly and blinked, staring out of her small hole in wonder. The white was beautiful. It was only her second time seeing it. Thinking of the last time she saw snow, she remembered being picked on by her siblings, though it was all in good fun, being the runt had it's down points. However, Kyuushi's speed had saved her from most of her siblings more cruel jokes. It had saved her life, too, but was no good in saving the others. She was too cowardly for revenge. She could hardly stand up to an angry rabbit (if there were such a creature) let alone a family of angry bears and her blood hungry ex-pack. Most wolves didn't kill other wolves without reason. Her ex-pack did. They hunted her like she was prey and they the predators. It was a miracle in itself that she had survived at all.
They were, after all, a pack of loners. They were the betrayers and the betrayed. The exiled members of packs both Light, Dark and Neutral. It was no wonder that they led a dog-eat-dog existence. Kyuushi had wondered how they had known right away, when her parents had been killed, and how they'd picked a new pack leader so soon. Perhaps they had staged the massacre themselves. THAT wouldn't surprise her. In fact, she expected it. She fully expected it from a pack of mish-mashed loners that simply wanted the comfort of others at their backs. However, they had a policy that only the strong survive. If you were too weak, they'd kill you so you couldn't pass your weakness to others. That was the kind of pack they were.
Sighing, Kyuushi closed her eyes. She didn't eat much these days, for fear of attracting too much attention, and leaving too much to be followed. Her meals were minimal, as long as they kept her alive.
'Why am I still alive? Why can't I just die?' Kyuushi asked herself silently. Whimpering softly, she told herself 'Because you're a coward. You can hardly take another's life, let alone another's. You want to live, spineless pup, whether you think so or not. It is your instinct, and in your blood.'
Making a noise between a groan and a sob, Kyuushi pushed herself harder into the walls of her tiny comfy-for-one makeshift cave, and wept for her lost family, and her pitiful existence.
